[00:00:02] Okay. Hey guys, welcome back. [00:00:05] Hope that you guys are having a good. [00:00:08] Well here we are a good May. We're almost halfway through the year and hope your kiddos, if you have kiddos or wrapping up their school year and you're. [00:00:20] You are probably running hither, thither and yawn trying to get through with all of your to do list and probably like pulling your hair out and all the fun things that happen this time of year. [00:00:34] So hey, just take a deep breath and just relax. Maybe you are listening to this on your way to your next appointment. If you are, just want to say thanks for, for tuning in. And we have been. By the way, this is Shannon Williams and this is the Grace and Grit mindset podcast. Sometimes I forget to intro. [00:00:55] I just go right into it. I'm straight business sometimes. [00:00:59] But we have been in a, in a series and I am a little behind. I think I'm maybe a week late, so please forgive me for that and just did a little, a little bit of traveling. So kind of behind. But we have been in a series of going through the parables and they've been great because I feel like they've been speaking to me right where I'm at. And there's something about just reading Jesus words sometimes because they're so. [00:01:31] Sometimes they're so profound. They are simple. The parables are simple, but they're so profound and you can't understand them unless you have ears to hear them. And that's exactly what Jesus wanted. [00:01:45] The Pharisees and the religious leaders and the legal people. The religious legalist back then couldn't understand what he was saying, but the people who needed to understand could understand. [00:01:57] And I think that's even true today. Like if you are listening to these episodes or even reading the parables of Jesus and you understand it's because you probably have the spirit of God within you and he helps you understand these. [00:02:12] And you know, here lately things have been so tense and so crazy in the world and it seems like it's just one hit after another. [00:02:23] Not just with our nation, our economy. [00:02:28] Everything around us is so turbulent and so shaking. Everything is shaking. [00:02:34] Everything is so unstable. [00:02:37] Everything feels unsafe right now. [00:02:40] And. And honestly, I just kind of want to just stay in my house and hide. I mean, that's the only place that feels safe. [00:02:48] And I know that that is not how God wants us to live, right? [00:02:55] But yet here we are. And so it's. It's been very, very challenging, I think, to not start to find ourselves living in a place of fear. [00:03:06] Or starting to take on these emotions and these feelings of anxiety or stress or just feeling like God is forsaking us or abandoning us. [00:03:21] So just looking at these parables have been really good because they remind us of some of these principles of the kingdom of heaven and how they operate. [00:03:33] We've talked about how things grow in the kingdom, how faith grows. We've talked about how the treasure, how Jesus, how finding him is like finding a treasure in a field, and how you give everything for that treasure. We've talked about the leaven in the dough and how when God is doing something in us, it. It starts small, you know, and how we shouldn't despise how God starts small in us when he's maybe growing in ministry or maybe he's doing something in you. That just seems so tin. [00:04:10] And I can so relate to this, you know, like, the things he's. He's doing in me and has done in me and. And I'm telling y', all, even in this moment right now, writing books and feeling so frustrated, because I feel like I'm nowhere near where I should be at this stage in my life, wanting to honestly throw in the towel and just be like, you know what? I don't even know why I'm doing this. Like, this is the struggle I go through almost daily and has been so, so hard here lately because I'm not getting the feedback that I thought I would if I'm just being honest. [00:04:46] So even dragging myself in here today to do this podcast, I'm doing it by faith. I'm doing it because. [00:04:52] Because I love him and because he. He deserves it. Even if I'm not getting the success I think I should be in my own eyes or what I think success, success looks like. He still deserves it. That I try and that I talk about him and that I give him glory and that I use any gift that he's given me to honor him with my life. And so I keep dragging myself in here to make these podcasts. I keep trying to write. I keep trying to sing sometimes I keep trying to use my voice in whatever capacity I can, even if it seems really small. [00:05:30] And so that's what that episode was about. I think that was the last one, so you should go back and listen to that. If you struggle with that, if the enemy constantly hits you with, like, what you're doing is so small, and it doesn't matter. [00:05:42] So this. This week, I want to talk about. [00:05:46] The kingdom of heaven is, like, waiting in the dark. [00:05:56] The kingdom of heaven is, like, waiting in the dark. [00:05:59] And we're going to look at the parable about the 10 virgins a little bit. And, you know, sometimes it can really feel like we're waiting in the dark, especially in a season like we're in right now. [00:06:15] You know, there's a lot of exposure happening right now in our government. And there are things that I feel like God has said he was going to bring a lot of exposure to our government, to people that are corrupt. [00:06:29] There's a lot of things coming out, a lot more is to come. But it seems like it's taken forever. [00:06:35] And not just that, but, you know, things in maybe your life and my life that God has maybe said, okay, I'm doing some things. And. And it feels like it's taking forever. I don't know if you can relate. It just feels like waiting in the dark. I feel like I'm waiting in the dark. Lord, like you said this. [00:06:58] And this is just. Why is this taking so long? And that's how I think these virgins felt. [00:07:08] Because they. They're told one thing. There's this beautiful bird outside my window, and it's red and yellow. I've never seen a bird like that. Oh, wow. Anyway, sorry. It just caught me off guard. That's how they felt, I think. [00:07:21] So instead of me talking about it, let's read Matthew 25. I'm in the Passion translation. [00:07:27] When my king. This is verse one. When my kingdom draws near. Jesus is saying, heaven's kingdom realm can be compared to 10 maidens who took their oil lamps. And you can even hear that bird, y'. All. He is loud, she is loud, whatever. Who can be compared to 10 maidens who took their oil lamps and went outside to meet the bridegroom and his bride? [00:07:50] He. [00:07:51] The ten maidens who took their oil lamps. And they went outside to meet the bridegroom and his bride. Five of them were foolish and ill prepared, for they took no extra oil for their lamps. Five of them are wise, for they took flask of oil, olive oil, with their lamps. When the bridegroom didn't come, when they expected. [00:08:14] Let me say that again. When the bridegroom didn't come, when they expected. [00:08:18] Let me just interject something there. [00:08:21] Expectation is the root of all disappointment. [00:08:25] They all grew drowsy and fell asleep. [00:08:29] And then suddenly, in the middle of the night, they were awakened by this shout. Get up, the bridegroom is here. [00:08:36] Come out and have an encounter with him. [00:08:39] So all the girls got up and trimmed their lamps because they all had some oil, right? But the foolish ones were running out of oil. [00:08:48] So they said to the five wise ones, share your oil with us, because our lamps are going out. [00:08:54] We can't, they replied. [00:08:57] So, hey, this is interesting. They weren't good little Christian girls. They didn't share their oil, right? [00:09:03] We don't have enough for all of us. You'll have to go and buy some for yourselves. [00:09:08] While the five girls were out buying oil, the bridegroom appeared. And those who were ready and waiting were escorted inside with him and the wedding party to enjoy the feast. And then the door was locked. Later, the five foolish girls came running up to the door and pleaded, lord, Lord, let us come in. But he called back, go away. Do I know you? I can assure you I don't even know you. And that is the reason you should always stay awake and be alert, but because you don't know the day of the hour or the hour when the bridegroom will appear. [00:09:41] And so obviously the primary text here is about the coming of the Lord and being aware or being alert and being ready for him and having oil in your lamp and all that that entails. That is the primary text. But I think underneath that, there's also this. [00:10:01] This understanding that. [00:10:05] That there is going to be delay. And what do you do in delay in. In your life in general, when God doesn't. [00:10:14] When God doesn't show up the way that you thought or when you thought. [00:10:18] And so there's this dark season of delay because the kingdom of heaven is often like waiting in the dark. [00:10:27] I would say it's a lot like waiting in the dark. [00:10:33] And one of the things that you can do and that I've learned to do, and I'm going to tell you something right now. I don't always do it consistently. [00:10:44] And I know better. As a Christian who has been in this for a long time and should know better, I know that I should constantly be getting oil for my lamp. [00:11:04] I don't ever want to be caught without oil. [00:11:08] So what does that mean? [00:11:10] That means I don't ever want to just get to a place where I am so depleted spiritually that I have nothing in a very bad season, that I'm so depleted that I'm just. I'm just done. [00:11:29] Because that's a. That's an open door for the enemy. I need the oil. [00:11:34] What is that? What does that look like? We have to make sure that we're tending our oil, right? Because not only is Jesus. Jesus paints a pretty clear picture here. Like he's saying, I mean, this is not just about oil, it being something you need so you can see for your lamp. But he's also saying, like, if you don't have the oil and you don't have the lamp going, then you're not waiting for me. You're not coming in to this banquet. [00:12:02] That sounds pretty scary. [00:12:05] I'm just going to leave that right there and let you draw your own conclusion with that. But I'm also saying, like, without the oil, we don't have, like, this intimacy with God. Because really, the oil represents the intimacy with God. It's the spiritual reserves. It's the Holy Spirit. It's this internal fellowship and communion with the Holy Spirit. That's what that is all about. So when we don't have that constant flow of this oil within us, then we're dying spiritually. [00:12:41] That's what that's all about. The darkness takes over us because the light is going out within us. [00:12:48] That means, like, how does that. How does that practically translate? That's. That's prayer. That's worship. That's scripture reading. [00:12:57] That's. That's sabbatical moments in our lives. That's creating boundaries of not, you know, I'm just going to be real practical with you, and some people are going to be like, that's too legalistic. But I don't. I totally disagree with you. That's creating boundaries of certain things I don't. Or I don't allow in my home, or there are certain things I don't do. There are certain people I don't get around. There's certain things I don't watch, you know, because I know that, that. That really messes with my oil reserve, you know, and I need my oil. I'm constantly guarding my oil because I need. I need to tend to my oil. [00:13:33] And, you know, that's. It's so important. [00:13:36] It's so important because we have to have the oil. That's what keeps the fire going. [00:13:41] That's what keeps the lamp going. And I can't see without the lamp. [00:13:48] If I. If I don't have the lamp, then I'm just groping around in the darkness and I can't see. [00:13:55] And I've got to be able to see because the truth is we are in the dark. [00:14:00] We are in the dark, but Jesus is the light of the world. [00:14:05] But we gotta have that lamp going so that we can see. [00:14:11] So I just want to say that, you know, number one, tend to your oil. That's the number one thing I would say as I look at this parable. [00:14:21] Make sure that that's what you see and that's what you're doing, because it. It's huge. [00:14:30] Okay, so these five girls are something else. I notice here is that they all fall asleep. They're all tired. So there's really no condemnation here about that because we're all going to be exhausted. [00:14:47] Delays are all going to. It's going to happen to all of us. All of us are going to be delayed. [00:14:52] So it wasn't like they, you know, he was mad at them for falling asleep. No, they all were waiting at the same time, but then they all got tired. [00:15:05] So I don't think this is a situation where, you know, you gotta. You're gonna. You need to beat yourself up because you got tired. [00:15:15] I think this is more about taking measures because you know you're gonna get tired. Does that make sense? [00:15:27] Because some days you're gonna feel great and some days you're not. [00:15:31] This is not a sprint. It is a marathon. [00:15:36] And I think I'm gonna be really honest with you. I am not a marathon runner. [00:15:42] But I'm gonna have to learn how to be one. And so are you. [00:15:47] I'm gonna give you a really practical story. [00:15:51] It's a true story. [00:15:54] I hate running. I've always hated running. And when I was in the. I think I was in junior high, like seventh grade, and for some stupid reason, I decided to be in track. And my coach, I guess there was like a shortage of people, and so they were like, please be in track or whatever. And so for some stupid reason, she was like, no, I think it was this. You can't run fast. So let me put you on the 800, which is a two lap race. Well, the 800 is extremely difficult because you have to run somewhat fast. But. But you also have to be able to run distance because that's two laps. [00:16:33] Let me tell y' all something. That race just about killed me. I think I came in last every time I ran it. [00:16:40] And that's what began my hatred for running. I have never, ever, ever loved running. I have always despised it in every way possible. [00:16:53] But I think more than any other sport, the Christian faith is so much like running than any other sport. [00:17:05] But it's not like a sprint. It is like a marathon. [00:17:10] And there are going to be days where you feel good and you're like, I got this today. I can do it. [00:17:17] But then there's days where you just. And I'm telling you, the last few days I've had this. I don't want to do anything I. I don't want to run. I don't want to run. I want to lay on the couch and I just want to watch, like, the Great British Baking show. [00:17:36] And I don't want to pray. [00:17:39] I don't want to read my Bible. [00:17:42] I don't want to go to church. [00:17:44] I don't want to talk to anybody. That's. That's. That happens. That happens to all of us sometimes. [00:17:51] You know, you may deal with it, maybe for you, you just want to go shopping and you want to be around all your friends. Well, I actually just want to be alone, completely alone. [00:18:01] And I don't even sometimes know why. You know, sometimes it's some kind of discouraging thing I just went through. [00:18:09] Disappointing thing that really hurt. You know, maybe something didn't happen the way I thought it would, and it just hurt my feelings really, really, really bad. [00:18:19] That's normal. [00:18:22] But the thing is, we're in a marathon race, and you have to figure out a way to keep going. [00:18:35] It's so hard. And you can't run out of oil, so you got to get back on track. And even today, it's been like a week and a half since I went to the gym. [00:18:47] I said, okay, you know what, self? [00:18:50] You're going to the gym. It's a Friday. [00:18:52] It's like the worst day to start going back to the gym. [00:18:56] So I did and I did like, a circuit of some kind of workout. It wasn't even like, you know, it was just a full body circuit. And. And then I got into the truck and I looked down and I had on two different. Two different shoes. [00:19:10] But you know what? [00:19:12] I went to the gym and I worked out. [00:19:16] So, okay, I'm getting my oil reserves back up, y'. All. That's what I'm trying to say is I'm tending to my oil. I know what it takes to keep going. [00:19:27] I know what I have to do, and it hurts, and it's really hard sometimes, but I can't afford to run out of oil, and you can't either. So what you don't want to do is what these other five women did. And they waited until it was too late to go get oil, and then they tried to get it from someone else. And the someone else has said, you can't have my oil. [00:19:51] You got to get your own. [00:19:54] You got. You. You have to learn how to get your own oil. And you don't want to wait until it's too far gone. [00:20:00] You got to. You've got to be mature enough in your walk with God. And. And, you know, I realize that we're all going through so much right now with all that's going on in the world. And things are so hard, y'. All. [00:20:12] Things are so discouraging economically. We are getting hit left and right with. I think. I think the devil's working overtime to try to really discourage Christians, to try to really bring us all down, to make us give up. I think we're so close to the great apostasy. If you don't know what that is, that is the great falling away of the saints. [00:20:33] I think we're so close to that. I think we are close to the end times. We are in probably the beginning stages of the end times where so many are going to fall away. [00:20:44] And I just pray. I just pray for all of us that we have oil, because that's what. That's what's going to keep us going. We can't afford to run out of oil. [00:20:54] Yes, we're going to get sleepy. Just like these virgins were waiting, and they all got sleepy, but it was the ones that had the oil. So they still had some level of intimacy. That's what this whole parable is about. They were tired, but they still had some level of intimacy. They still had prayer. [00:21:17] They still had worship in their heart. They still had probably fellowship with the saints. They still were reading their scriptures. Were they disappointed? Were they discouraged? Were they frustrated that this. That this was not working out? Were they probably, like, sometimes even a little bit angry? Like, why is this not working? Why is this taking so long? You told me you were coming back. Where are you? [00:21:48] Because that's what he had told them. Like, he goes. He tells them he's coming for them, and they wait and they wait and they wait, and he never comes. Where are you? [00:21:59] Have you ever felt like that, like, the Lord told you something and you're. You're like, okay, I'm. I'm doing what you said. [00:22:08] Are you going to keep up your end of the bargain? [00:22:11] Guys, I know how that feels. [00:22:14] And I. I mean, I think that even this week, I had this conversation with the Lord, and I was angry. [00:22:20] I'm like, I did what you said. [00:22:24] Why won't you do what you said? [00:22:27] You know, And. And I just. I'm just being so honest with y' all right now because I feel like so many ministers or so many people out there with a platform, they don't. They just. They just make it sound like they're so. Got it all together, and they, you know, here's how you do it, abc. One, two, three, blah, blah, blah. And they act like they just have. Have it all perfectly, and they don't. I'm telling you, it's frustrating, and we all struggle, but at the end of the day, if you really love the Lord, you still keep getting the oil. You humble yourself before him, and you just. You know what? You just trust him. You just go, I don't understand you. I don't understand why you did this. I don't know. But I know that you know better than me and know that you love me because you proved it when you sent your son. And he died for me. And you love me. And that's all I know. That's all I know. All I know is you've. You've never let me down before. You've always come through for me. All I know is you saved me 150,000 times before, and nothing in my life makes sense right now. But I know that you are gonna. You're gonna. You're gonna bring good out of this, Lord. I know you are, because you always do. [00:23:41] That's what keeps me coming back. That's what keeps me getting oil. [00:23:45] Even though I don't understand anything. Yes, I'm still in the dark. [00:23:50] But the kingdom of God is like being in the dark, waiting in the dark. So if you find yourself right now waiting in the dark, I want to encourage you, as I'm kind of getting close to wrapping up this episode, I want to encourage you not to stop getting the oil. I want to encourage you. And they said that better. And reverse the negative. I want to encourage you to keep getting oil. [00:24:20] And I want to. I want to tell you that by doing a couple of things here, stop measuring faithfulness by. By feelings. [00:24:29] Because some days you're going to feel faithful, and some days you're going to feel numb. [00:24:36] But both days, you're still waiting. [00:24:41] So it becomes about. [00:24:43] It becomes less and less about how you feel, and it becomes more and more about what you do in spite of how you feel. [00:24:52] And that's really challenging for women who like me. If you're like me, you're very emotional. You're very sensitive because it almost feels like you're betraying yourself or you're not being authentic. [00:25:04] If you operate in anything other than how you really feel, like you feel like you're lying to yourself or you're lying to other people. Like I'm almost acting. You know what I mean? [00:25:16] If I'm not being genuine. [00:25:18] But the truth is it. It's actually that you're living from what you really do believe instead of letting your emotions, which are not always the truth, right? [00:25:31] You're not letting your emotions dictate your actions, but you're choosing to live from the place of knowing that what you really believe about God is the truth and not how you may be feeling at the moment. So how do you do some of this stuff? How do you constantly get or continually get oil to keep your lamp going and to not find yourself in these places of being without the intimacy that you need, without the light that you need to keep going? [00:26:02] And it's by building rhythms. [00:26:05] It's by building rhythms into your life. [00:26:09] So. But what you see in this parable is you see these foolish virgins, and they were reactive. [00:26:15] They were not proactive. They were not prepared like the wise ones. The preparation is really important. [00:26:22] You need. We. We all need to go into these seasons of our life, and we need to be more prepared. [00:26:31] We need to understand that waiting is part of life. [00:26:37] It's. It's part of the thing. It's. It's. It's literally part of the thing, especially if there's a promise involved in. [00:26:46] And we are living in a promise because Jesus said he was going to come back. So we literally are living through a promise of his return. [00:26:57] So faith isn't sustained by hype. It's sustained by habits. So it's sustained by habits. [00:27:06] So what are these habits that we could build or these rhythms that we could build? And it's just so practical, y'. All. [00:27:17] It's just so practical. [00:27:20] I don't. I don't know. I mean, I think that we could just make this really, really harder than it is. [00:27:32] But I think it's. It's things like. [00:27:37] And I think it could be different for everybody, because I don't. I don't. What I. What I don't want to do is make it legalistic for people. [00:27:45] But I know for me. I know for me and my husband what works for us and what we feel like works for us. And sometimes the Lord will change that up. [00:27:57] But I know there's certain rhythms that work. And when you look at the early church and the way that they did things, there's certain rhythms that work that seem to be very biblical, and for the way that the early. [00:28:12] The Israelites did things as well. Very, very biblical and ancient practices that I think are very. And I don't have time to go into those, but I think these things are incredibly powerful. And as far as, like, prayers, liturgical things, let me put it that way, because this is very. A lot of people don't do this kind of stuff. [00:28:40] And I think it depends on your denomination. But I think liturgical type worship is beautiful. [00:28:47] Reading written prayers are phenomenally powerful in getting people on the same page and getting your mind focused. So I think that's very powerful. I think also of course, of course, of course reading Scripture and I think where we get overwhelmed with this is maybe we try to read too much or we try to. We just don't know where to start. [00:29:14] I think that you've got to be a little bit spirit led about this. [00:29:19] I really think that you've got to ask the Lord to show you how. [00:29:22] Where do I start? [00:29:24] Show me where to go. Because this can be overwhelming to you if you're a new Christian especially. [00:29:30] I love to just read. Right now I'm reading through the Gospels. I. And I'm also doing a one year plan. So you might just start with like a one year plan. And, and it's basically like four chapters, I think, a day. [00:29:42] Or like right now I am reading through the Gospels and Mike and I will read like one chapter a day in the Gospels and then we kind of talk about that some. So I love that kind of stuff. [00:29:55] It's. The important thing is that you are doing something. [00:30:00] Worship is huge. [00:30:04] Gathering with the saints is huge. These things, this is oil. [00:30:09] This is where you get it. [00:30:11] And you have to be intentional. What you see in this parable is it's intentional. [00:30:18] Oil doesn't just show up in their lamps or in the jars. [00:30:24] They had to go out and get. [00:30:27] Has to be gathered. It has to be bought. Actually, there's a price. [00:30:31] There's a price that you pay for oil. [00:30:36] That means time. In, in our language, there's time. That's, that's the price. [00:30:43] There's effort, there's intentionality. And that's usually what people don't want to pay. What do they usually say? I don't have time. I don't have time. Right. [00:30:52] Do you read your word in the morning? Do you pray? I don't have time. I don't have time. [00:30:58] Oh, okay. [00:31:01] Okay. Well, show me your mental state. [00:31:04] Show me your anxiety level. Show me like, how are you and your spouse getting along? Like, because like that's probably a big indicator. [00:31:18] Like you're, you're saying you don't have time, but you're, you're a disaster. [00:31:22] Right? [00:31:24] That's a whole other episode probably. [00:31:27] So I think that this is like, wow, I, I can't believe this episode ended up being good. Because when I pushed play, I was gonna be like. I was like, lord, I don't even feel this. I don't even really. [00:31:39] I don't want to do this today. I'm having such a terrible week. I really, honestly, I just wanted to lay on the couch and feel sorry for myself. So this is really encouraging me as well. So. So get. Get. Get some oil, guys. I. I'm gonna get my own oil as well. I. I know better. I, too. I know better. [00:32:00] And I don't feel like the Holy Spirit is beating us up or beating me up. I. I feel like he's just reminding us, like. [00:32:11] Like it's there. The. The oil is there. You don't have to. [00:32:17] It's not that it's so expensive that you can't get it. It's there for the taking. [00:32:23] And it's just. It's just the intentionality of us going after it. It's the asking, the seeking, the knocking. I talked about that in the last episode. It's not that hard. We just don't do it. We just don't do it. And then we wonder why our lives are falling apart. [00:32:39] We wonder why we're just. Just a basket case all the time. Right? [00:32:46] Yeah. So build rhythms. Those are the rhythms. Those are the rhythms. The rhythms of being constantly intentional about it. And then watch your life just become way more full of light, full of this oil of the Holy Spirit. [00:33:03] I hope that this is encouraging you. I know. It's definitely making me feel better this week. [00:33:11] I. [00:33:12] I love this parable. I think it's so powerful. [00:33:16] And so I think that this week is a great reminder of how important it is to get your own oil, to not depend on other people. Because, you know, I mean, it's cool to go listen to other. And that is a. That is a way to get oil, is to listen to other teaching and stuff like that. I definitely think that's important. [00:33:35] But it's also important for you to interact personally with the Holy Spirit by reading the word for yourself, for you. For you to actually open your mouth and pray and interact with Him. [00:33:45] Super important as well. Going to church, all the things that we all know we're supposed to do, guys, we all know we're supposed to do these things, right? [00:33:56] So, yeah. [00:33:57] Hey, I hope that this is. [00:34:01] Has helped you. [00:34:03] And listen, if it has, make sure that you subscribe to this podcast on whatever platform you like. [00:34:10] I know it's on. It's on YouTube as well, so you can definitely subscribe to my channel there if you. [00:34:16] If you're a person who struggles with your thoughts. You know, when you're tired of circling the same stupid mountains over and over, like anxiety or depression or insecurity. [00:34:29] You should definitely get my book, Choosing Better, Leaving the Mountains We Were Never Meant To Circle. It's on Amazon. You can do. You can get it in the paperback or it's available. Kindle version as well. [00:34:43] Yeah. And so, hey, until next time, I pray that you guys have a great week.
